Expert backs OT move into Central African Republic

July 29 2008

Egypt\'s Orascom Telecom has recently revealed news it will venture into two African countries, namely Burundi and Central African Republic, one of the world\'s poorest countries.

Expert Philippe Solomon commented: \"In my opinion, OT\'s move into the Central African market is based on the projected potential for this sector to grow. One should also take into account that this country has also adopted telecommunications policy reforms, which help in attracting foreign players.\"

According to the latest available data, the Republic has limited telephone service with fixed-line connections for well less than 1 per 100 persons coupled with mobile-cellular usage of only about 3 per 100 persons.

In recent years, the World Bank Group’s has backed telecom projects as part of efforts to address economic recovery in the Central African Republic.
