Kenyan Operators to Focus on Data Services & High Speed Broadband at East Africa Com

March 21 2010

With voice services reaching saturation, East African operators are naturally turning their focus to provide more data services to subscribers, and with the submarine cable SEACOM having landed last year there’s more capacity to play with, and for the lowest prices yet. Investing in infrastructure will continue to be a priority as operators seek to enhance mobile data transmission across East African markets.
Sharing and debating best practice strategies to drive the growth of data services in East Africa’s telecommunications markets will be a key focus at the East Africa Com 2010 Conference, and leading East African operators - including Kenya’s Safaricom, Zain, Orange Telkom Kenya, and others - will meet next month for this purpose at Nairobi’s Kenyatta International Conference Centre. Delegates at East Africa Com will be able to hear presentations from Michael Joseph, CEO, Safaricom, Mickael Ghossein, CEO, Orange Telkom Kenya, Bashar Arafeh, COO East Africa Region, Zain Group, Jayant Khosla, CEO East Africa, Essar Group, as well as CEOs from Uganda, Sudan and the rest of East Africa.
In 4Q09 Safaricom invested about Sh7.5 billion (US$923 million) in cross-section technologies, while Orange Telkom Kenya boosted its fixed line capacity to accommodate more data. Zain Kenya went further in expanding international roaming coverage for data services. This investment and activity is testament to the importance of data services to operators in the region, and with a huge boost in capacity due as a result of submarine cables landing, it will be a scramble between operators to be role out high speed networks which will deliver quality and affordable services to customers.
East Africa Com is a unique learning opportunity and a one-stop-shop for telecoms professionals to network and develop their business with all parts of the East African telecoms ecosystem. The 1000 delegates will benefit from dedicated interaction and contact building time, thanks to interactive sessions & tools: Speed Networking with executive-level delegates at the beginning of the conference, the online networking system 2 weeks before, during, and 3 months after the event itself, as well as informal meeting times such as the evening drinks reception & entertainment taking place in the 50 stand+ exhibition hall.
Attendance to East Africa Com is free of charge for all regional service providers and early bird discounts apply for all other companies with a chance to save US$300 – until the 23rd of March. With over 50 companies registered to attend at this early stage, the learning and networking opportunities at East Africa Com 2010 will be un-paralleled. It is the only conference and exhibition dedicated solely to telecommunications in East Africa and is a must-attend for anyone working in or looking to do business in this region\'s telecoms sector.
